Restorative Peacemakers

A number of church members are involved in restorative justice initiatives that allow them to pursue peace in practical ways. Criminology professor and author Rick Sarre, SJD, (Adelaide congregation, South Australia) said: “The restorative themes of repentance, redemption, and reconciliation…should be especially applauded and embraced in our movement.”

For those who are drawn to explore restorative justice options in their communities, it is a way of pursuing the Community of Christ mission. “We are called to minister to the bruised and brokenhearted of the justice system,” Rick said, “victims and offenders alike.”

Larry McGuire, president of the Cedar Valley-Nauvoo USA Mission Center (Cedar Rapids congregation, Iowa), would agree. “Restorative justice is an integral principle within the Community of Christ,” he said. Larry represents the church on several community peace and justice initiatives, including working with an ecumenical group that has made restorative justice its focus.

The Cedar Rapids congregation he attends has also been very involved. It has hosted restorative practices, including Circles of Support and Accountability for offenders, and has served as a neutral facility for family team meetings designed to help families remain intact. These efforts have supported members and nonmembers. “Some congregations are tolerant of what leaders do,” Larry explained. “This congregation and mission center are more than supportive and encourage me to be active on behalf of the church.”

Getting Started

Many programs offer accessible ways for people to volunteer, get trained, and get started in restorative justice. Community of Christ Peacebuilding Ministries offers training for facilitators in conflict resolution/reconciliation and Listening Circles. For information, visit www.CofChrist.org/peacejustice/ or call Sandee Gamet at 1-800-825-2806, ext. 1353. Practitioners also recommend contacting local court officials to find out about restorative justice programs in one’s community.
