connecting the Community of Christ World Headquarters community
Around Headquarters
Five Graceland Winter Term students have joined headquarters activities
from January 9 through 24. Alan Savage, Nauvoo, Illinois; Lauren Wilson,
Independence, Missouri; Caleb Maupin, Fort Worth, Texas; Katie Harmon,
Charlestown, Indiana; and Jurgen Heijdenrijk, Netherlands, are participating
in the Winter Term course “Dimensions of Church Leadership.” They are being
immersed in a variety of areas of church leadership including Congregational
Leaders Workshop planning, Web site as a tool for outreach and communications,
financial leadership, key theological questions facing the church, Mission
Support Ministries Design overview, and much more. As you see these fab five
around headquarters, please be sure to greet them and share a little bit about
your ministries here.
New Resource Available
The new video feature, Road to Recovery, recently produced by
Electronic Media, is not to be missed. Visit the church’s Web site at
www.CofChrist.org and click on the video feature button.
Dave Wheaton and Jaylene O’Keefe drove 2,622 miles between the Sunday and
Tuesday before Thanksgiving to gather video from the Escatawpa, Pascagoula,
Bayou la Batre, and Vancleave, Missisippi, congregations. Local interviews
were produced in the Electronic Media studio. In all, nine people were
interviewed on video and one by phone. Photos from Rick Boyd in Risk
Management and from FEMA and the U.S. Navy enhanced this excellent resource.
Clint Metcalf provided the map background artwork.
Jaylene was the producer/writer/videographer/editor and the person who
created and posted the streaming media to the Web. Dave Wheaton was technical
director/videographer.
When asked how much time goes into producing something like this, Jaylene
replied, “Time-wise, this one was maybe six weeks on and off in
pre-production, four days production, a week scripting, and a week and a half
editing.” All for 11 minutes 43 seconds of heartfelt story that touches so
many lives.
This also couldn’t have been done without the help of so many local folks,
in particular mission center president Rod Tillman and the mission center
financial officer, Stancil Wilson. Credit also goes to Jane Watkins for
editorial input and Linda Booth as the apostle for Gulf USA Mission Center,
and pre-production informational interviews (not videotaped) with Paul Davis,
Ken Schnell, John Chatburn, Craig Lenfestey, Jane Watkins, and Susan Naylor.
Thought You’d Like to Know
Headquarters employees filled four barrels with Christmas gifts to be
shared with the Community Services League. The generosity of headquarters
employees is appreciated by our associations here and by the Independence area
community.
Community Services League always has a need for food and especially paper
goods for their pantries. If you’d like to continue giving individually or as
a family, these donations are always welcome at any of the Community Services
League locations.
The 2005 estimated Messiah attendance was 3,500. In 2004 attendance was
2,200. Four hundred kids and their families enjoyed an afternoon with the
Hands-on-Handel for Kids performance. Bryan Busby, Channel 9 weather
forecaster, was the conductor/master of ceremony for this afternoon of fun.
Jack Ergo was costumed (powdered wig and all!) as George Frederic Handel.
Kansas City Symphony management was present at the 2005 concert and was so
impressed with the performance and the Auditorium chamber that they have asked
about the possibility of presenting a pops concert here.
The 2006 performance of Handel's Messiah by the Independence Messiah
Choir and the Kansas City Symphony will be held at the Auditorium on Saturday,
November 18. Tickets will be available from the Kansas City Symphony sometime
in late summer. Check the Web site for the most current information
www.CofChrist.org/messiah.
New Recording! – Jan Kraybill, principal organist and director of music
for Community of Christ, has just released Rejoice and Remember: Piano
Music for All Seasons. It includes wonderful arrangements of familiar
hymns like "Holy, Holy, Holy," "Morning Has Broken," I Need Thee Every Hour,"
and many more. This recording and Jan's first CD (Two by 2: Two Organ
Symphonies on Two Magnificent Organs) are available in the Temple
bookstore and through Herald House.
Super Bowl VII Recital –Jan Kraybill presents her popular annual Super
Bowl Sunday organ event on February 5. Since Recital VII will occur just one
week after W.A. Mozart's 250th birthday, Jan will perform the rousing Fantasy
in F Minor, one of only three pieces for organ by this master composer. Also
included will be works by J.S. Bach for both organ and harpsichord, Marcel
Dupré's challenging Symphony No. 2 for organ, and more. The recital begins at
3:00 p.m. in the Temple, leaving plenty of time for other Super Bowl events
that evening, including the big game!
Did you know the Temple and Auditorium hosted 17,951 visitors in 2005,
173 more than in 2004? This year we had visitors from all 50 states in the
United States including seven from Vermont, the District of Columbia, and
Rhode Island! We also had visitors from forty-two countries with the top three
being Canada (175), French Polynesia (76), and Australia (68).
The library has received approximately 40 books and a dozen magazines
for the book and magazine exchange. Please keep them coming, and take a moment
to come and pick up something to read. Remember you can also get on a routing
list for the approximately 170 magazines, newsletters, and journals that the
library subscribes to. If you need an updated list, contact Suzanne McDonald
at smcdonald@CofChrist.org or ext. 2399. Also, take a moment to come by
and browse the new books recently received. They are located on a table near
the library entrance.
Helpful Hints and Tips to Make Your Life Easier
Scheduling Appointments in GroupWise
Imagine that you have an important meeting to arrange with a number of busy
people. What is the best way to go about arranging the meeting? You could send
out an e-mail and ask everyone for available dates and times, but that is too
time-consuming. An easier approach is to use GroupWise.
Did you know that when you are creating a meeting appointment in GroupWise
(File | New | Appointment) you can see if the meeting attendees are busy? Here
are the steps to take.
- Enter the proposed meeting date, time, and duration.
- Click on the "Busy Search" button or click on Tools | Busy Search on
the main menu bar.
- A "Choose Appointment Time" dialog window will open.
- Click on the "Invite to Meeting" button.
- From the "Busy Search" dialog window you can add the names of those
you want to attend the meeting. You can also indicate the number of days
into the future that you want to search.
- When you are done, click "OK" to return to the "Choose Appointment
Time" window.
- You will see a list of attendees, a timeline in the "Individual
Schedule Grid," and a number of boxes. These boxes show the Busy,
Tentative, and Out of Office appointments already on each person's
schedule.
- You can then look for a common time when everyone is available, by
clicking on a time. A gray box will appear in the time line and you can
move it around to a mutually available time or you can click on the
"Auto-Select" button and GroupWise will find a date and time when everyone
is available.
There are some important things to note about this approach.
- Some people are afraid that they are invading someone’s privacy. Do
not worry; you will not see specific information about the appointment,
just when someone is available. Please note that if you have proxy access,
you will see the details of the calendar.
- This works best if everyone is keeping his or her appointments in
GroupWise.
- The Busy Search option does not work for those who do not use
GroupWise. This will be indicated by their name being grayed out.
Want more information? Search for Busy Search in the search tab of
GroupWise Help and read the article “To find out when users and resources are
available for an appointment.” If you are still unsure, call the Help Desk at
extension 1234.
