Come to Kirtland to Visit, Serve
BY CHERIE BULETZA
It was 1967, and I was 21 years old. I lived and worked in
Washington, D.C. A friend from Eastlake, Ohio, suggested that we visit her
hometown. I had a Triumph Spitfire and more adventurous sense than good sense.
Friday after work we left for Eastlake. Saturday night found us driving without
a definite destination. In the dark I saw a bright light. I stopped, left the
car, and saw a plaque above a window.
“House of Lord.”
Awestruck, I realized this was the Kirtland Temple.
In 2009 I returned to Kirtland, this time as a tour guide.
The Visitor and Spiritual Formation Center houses a museum that guests visit
while waiting for tours. The administrative wing contains a library where staff
members can borrow many of the books sold in the Mercantile.
The Reflecting Chapel, nestled in the education wing, provides meditation space.
And, lastly, the theater provides a starting point for tours.
My month in Kirtland was eye-opening, exciting, and fulfilling. I’m back in New
Jersey now, but much of my heart remains in Kirtland.
I’m going back in the spring. Come with me. Volunteers are welcome to serve in
several areas: maintenance, gardens, retail store, museum, artifact management,
and guides.
Choose what suits your personality and talents.
I’ll see you there!
