Healing Self and Community Workshop

The Sixth Annual Health and Spirituality Workshop, “Healing Self and Community,” has an extended schedule this year—November 7–8, 2008—at the Temple in Independence, Missouri. Three experiential classes will be offered on Friday afternoon, with Friday supper available. The Friday evening keynote address will be open to all at no charge, and eight skill-building sessions will take place on Saturday, with lunch included in the cost. The keynote “Called to Serve: Becoming Community” will be offered by Reverend Doctor Helen Appelberg from Galveston, Texas. Appelberg founded Community of Hope, training people of all faiths to be lay chaplains for those facing illness, loss, and other crises.

Friday experiential sessions will include: “Grins and Misty Eyes, Chuckles and Tears, Groans and Laughter: The Healing Power of Drama and the Dramatic Power of Healing” by John Horner and Hemdah Salonimer-Horner; “Exploring Complementary Energy Therapies” by Diana Guthrie; and “Guided Imagery and Meditation” by Alice Sims.

Saturday skill-building sessions will include: “Ministry of Presence to a Broken World” by Rev. Dr. Helen Appelberg; “Thank My Lucky Scars” by Ward Foley; “Calling all Angels: Reaching Out to People with Depression” by Larry and Sharon Norris; “Stabilizing and Treating the American Family” by Josef Walker; “Healing in the Face of Grief” by Susan Sonnenday Vogel; “Coherence: Emerging Research on the Interconnections of the Head, Heart, Lungs, and Spirit” by Kathy Robinson; and “Sharing the Community of Hope with You!” by Reverend Laurie McKim, Linda Gerding, and Carl Turlin.
