Community of Christ Sends $10,000 in Aid to People
Devastated by Floods in Haiti

Apostle Bunda Chibwe (assigned to the Africa/Haiti Mission Field for the Community of Christ) shared sad news with the Community of Christ World Conference on Thursday morning. Several days of heavy rains in Haiti had just ended, leaving many areas completely flooded and thousands of families devastated.

Thursday afternoon, Paul Davis of the Presiding Bishopric announced that $10,000 had already been committed from the church's disaster relief funds to aid those affected. The 2,800 delegates representing more than 50 nations and hundreds of guests applauded in a show of support.

Community of Christ Haiti Mission Center Financial Officer Michel Rosier is heading up local relief efforts on behalf of the church and will distribute the money sent from the church's Oblation Fund. After Rosier has had time to further assess the situation, additional funds will be made available to meet the needs of the people.

The Community of Christ congregation at Cacasse was destroyed by flash flooding and thousands of people lost their homes. Many church members were evacuated to large tents that are severely overcrowded and there is not enough food for everyone.

Many church leaders from Haiti are currently serving as delegates to the 2007 World Conference at Community of Christ International Headquarters in Independence, Missouri, USA. The church’s International Services Office is assisting delegates as they attempt to contact home to receive specific information about church members and their own families.

At this time the best way to help is through prayer and donations to the Oblation Fund. Contributions can be made online at www.CofChrist.org/WorldMinistries/, by using Mission Tithes envelopes, or by mailing a check or money order to Community of Christ World Headquarters, ATTN: Oblation Fund, 1001 W. Walnut, Independence, MO 64050 USA.
