Hundreds of people in need have received medical assistance from
Community of Christ Oblation Fund. |
Contributions from the Community of Christ Oblation Fund made possible a two-day
mission to provide medication and treatment of malaria patients in Baggao,
Philippines. Malaria is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many
resource-poor countries where prevention and treatment options are not readily
available to the population.Three hundred sixty people registered for the
malaria clinic, but there were actually more than 400 people seeking medical
assistance. Priority was given to children from the local elementary school,
which is considered to be below normal health standards.
The medical team, consisting of Dr. Rogelio Cabida, Dr.
Donato, three nurses, and nine volunteers, was well-prepared with malaria
medication, and stocked with multi-vitamins, antibiotics, and paracetamol
(aspirin). Besides vaccinating for malaria, the team of volunteers dealt with
malnutrition, coughs, and various aches and pains of their patients.
Local residents said this was the first time a medical
mission of this type had given the medical supplies to the people rather than
selling the items to them. A January trip helped people in Dingading, another
area with a severe malaria outbreak.
