Internship Opportunities at Historic Sites

College students looking for an exciting, challenging, and rewarding summer experience are encouraged to apply for a summer internship with the Community of Christ Historic Sites. A total of eighteen positions are available: ten in Nauvoo, Illinois, and eight in Kirtland, Ohio.

Summer interns at the Joseph Smith Historic Site on the bend of the Mississippi River in Nauvoo and at the Kirtland Temple Historic Site in Ohio will receive

  • six semester hours of college credit from Graceland University ($2,000 value).
  • weekly stipend of $175
  • free housing
  • priceless experiences in leadership development, public speaking, and building community with visitors, colleagues, and members of local congregations
  • strengthening of one’s individual faith journey

The internship program is a two-summer experience. The first summer is spent in Illinois at the Joseph Smith Historic Site. There interns study historic site management, historic interpretation and artifact management, Nauvoo church history, and Jacksonian history of the United States. Interns also serve as historic interpreters (guides) at the site. A project that relates to some aspect of the historic site is completed during the internship. Opportunities to develop church leadership skills are available by participating in local Community of Christ congregations, reunions, and youth camps.

The second summer is spent in Ohio at the Kirtland Temple. Interns build on historic sites knowledge gained at Nauvoo by studying church history (the Kirtland Years) and "A Curator’s Approach to Museum Education." Interns share Community of Christ heritage in the role of historic interpreter and are encouraged to continue development of church leadership skills.

For summer 2005 internships, apply by May 2. Applicants from various colleges and universities and with a variety of majors are invited to apply. Site coordinators will be on the Graceland University, Lamoni, Iowa, campus for interviews March 29 and 30.
