Internship Opportunities at
Community of Christ Historic Sites
Want to have an exciting, challenging, and rewarding summer
experience? Apply for one of 18 summer internships with Community of Christ
Historic Sites. Ten interns will be selected to serve at the Joseph Smith
Historic Site in Nauvoo, Illinois, and eight will be selected to serve at
Kirtland Temple in Kirtland, Ohio.
The internship program is a two-summer commitment, with the
first phase served in Nauvoo. At the Joseph Smith Historic Site, interns study
historic sites management, historic interpretation and artifact management,
Nauvoo church history, and the Jacksonian history of the United States. Interns
also serve as historic interpreters, guiding tours at the site. A project
related to the site is also to be completed. Participation with the local
Community of Christ congregation, reunions, and youth camps provide
opportunities to develop leadership skills.
Interns spend their second summer in Kirtland. Here participants
build on historic sites knowledge gained at Nauvoo by studying church
history--the Kirtland years--and A Curator's Approach to Museum Education.
Interns will also share Community of Christ heritage in their role as historic
interpreter. Further development of church leadership skills is encouraged and
supported.
The internship program is administered by Graceland University
and is open to any student who has completed her or his freshman year of
college. Students receive six semester hours of college credit at no cost (a
$2,000 value), a weekly stipend of at least $175, free housing on site, as well
as priceless experiences in leadership development, building community with
visitors and local church members, and strengthening one's individual faith
journey.
Encourage college students to apply now! Selection begins in
February 2004. For more information and an application, contact Joyce Shireman,
Joseph Smith Historic Site coordinator, at (217) 453-2246 or jshisctr@nauvoo.net,
or Barb Walden, Kirtland Temple site coordinator, at (440) 256-1441 or temple2@ncweb.com.
