Service Opportunities At
Community of Christ
Historic Sites
Are you looking for some exciting and challenging ways to spend your
retirement days? Why not consider becoming a volunteer at one of the Community
of Christ Historic Sites. Opportunities are available at the Kirtland Temple
Historic Site in Kirtland, Ohio, and at the Joseph Smith Historic Center in
beautiful Nauvoo on the bend of the Mississippi.
Ministry opportunities for volunteers include serving as historic
interpreters, working in the gift shop or assisting with building and grounds
maintenance and repairs depending on the gifts and talents of the volunteer.
Orientation to the ministry opportunities is tailored to meet the needs of
the volunteer.
Time commitment for serving at the historic sites range from 4-6 weeks to
several months/years or you may want to consider becoming a permanent resident
volunteer. Most volunteers provide ministry 3-4 days per week. Currently, there
are immediate openings for both short term and permanent resident volunteers.
Qualifications for providing ministry at historic sites includes good health,
able to walk, climb stairs, be on your feet for an hour or more at a time,
knowledge of church history and/or willingness to learn; ability to interact
with people of a variety of faith journeys and ages in a kind and
non-confrontational manner. Volunteers are expected to abide by and conform to
those standards established for Community of Christ volunteers.
Furnished housing is provided to the volunteer at no cost. Utilities are also
provided except for long distance phone calls. For those volunteers with RVs,
coming to Nauvoo, an RV pull through space with full hookups – water, sewer,
electric at the Community of Christ Camp Nauvoo is provided. The campground is
about 5 minutes from the Joseph Smith Historic Site, Visitor Center. Water
regulators are required and are available at the visitor center.
Providing ministry at historic sites is challenging and fulfilling. It is an
opportunity to live out the counsel provided in Section 161 of the Doctrine
and Covenants, that is to look beyond the horizon to which you are sent and
to tell the sacred story, the story of scripture and of faith which empowers and
illuminates, a story of community building from the 1830s to the present.
