Children Experience Hope Overcoming Fear
September 11, 2002

Approximately 300 elementary students from the Independence School District will experience “Hope Overcoming Fear” with the Children’s Peace Pavilion and StoryTellers Inc. from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the World Plaza of the Community of Christ Temple at 201 South River, Independence, Missouri.

As people throughout the community come together for healing on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack, the Children’s Peace Pavilion wants to help children and families move forward with hope. This year on September 11, third-, fourth-, and fifth-graders from Proctor and Millcreek Elementary Schools will transform the letters F-E-A-R into H-O-P-E through an artistic experience and participate in a variety of hands-on, team-building activities. These schools are members of the Children’s Peace Pavilion Pledge School Program, which helps them incorporate peace as an integral part of their everyday curriculums. Forty-three schools in the metro area are currently involved in this comprehensive peace education program. C.S.1 Elementary, another Pledge School from the Kansas City area, will participate at 7:00 a.m. in a walk from Ilus Davis Park to Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral. This event is sponsored by the Kansas City Interfaith Council.

All are invited to experience the Children’s Peace Pavilion “Hope Overcoming Fear” exhibits from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. on the World Plaza, followed by an interfaith service at 6:45 p.m. in the Community of Christ Auditorium: “September 11, 2002: Remembrance, Healing, and Hope.”

The Children’s Peace Pavilion is a one-of-a-kind, non-sectarian museum dedicated to peace education and is located in the Community of Christ Auditorium. Since 1995 it has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors. The Pavilion is free and teaches life skills such as self-appreciation, communication, cooperation, conflict resolution, and goal setting through a variety of interactive hands-on exhibits. Based in Kansas City, Storytellers Inc. is a multicultural non-profit arts organization dedicated to creative community building.
