The Reverend John L. McCullough, executive director of Church
World Service, traveled from New York to Community of Christ World
Headquarters in Independence, Missouri, to acknowledge the $25,000 grant from
the World Hunger Fund to support Church World Service's efforts to aid
Afghanistan refugees.
McCullough spoke at a luncheon saying, “This assistance will
make a real difference for those who are suffering from hunger and exposure
this winter in refugee camps in Afghanistan and on the Pakistani border.”
In addition to the $25,000 presented now, Community of Christ
has challenged members and friends to contribute an additional amount to the
World Hunger Fund in February and March for the same cause. Church World
Service will also be the recipient of these funds.
These dollars will be used to meet basic living needs of those
displaced by Taliban rule, the devastation of the air strikes, and the impact
of the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan. Aid agencies believe more than two
million people will not have enough food for the winter. But these
contributions can help!
Dr. Wallace B. Smith, chair of the World Hunger Fund, said,
“We are happy to establish this relationship with one of the major relief
and service organizations in the world. We look forward to participation with
them in other mutually satisfying projects.”
This is an invitation for people to go beyond what has been
done to fund the significant needs related specifically to the events of
September 11. For more information about Church World Service, visit www.churchworldservice.org
