Emergency Relief Helps Feed Refugees in Africa Mission
Field
The
World Hunger Committee made a $10,000 emergency grant on July 17 to the Africa
Mission Field for refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Apostle
Bunda Chibwe reports that people in refugee camps in the Democratic Republic
of Congo and Zambia are suffering from acute hunger and malnutrition because
of a general lack of ability to purchase simple food items. Many of these
refugees are members of Community of Christ congregations who have been
displaced by intense fighting.
National church leaders from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia
will travel to areas where the refugee camps are located and help provide the
logistical support necessary to purchase and distribute emergency food
rations. They will purchase food stocks from local farmers and merchants and
make distribution based on the needs of individual families and groups. Food
items to be supplied to the refugees include beans, fish, corn meal, and
cooking oil.
