Remembrance, Healing, and Hope
Congregations throughout Independence will participate in activities
coordinated by the Independence Ministerial Alliance designed to bring the
community together to focus on healing and hope. At 7:48 a.m., when the first
plane struck the World Trade Center in 2001, churches across the city will
toll their bells. This will serve as the community’s call to prayer.
Throughout the day various congregations will be open as vigil sites to anyone
who wishes to stop by for individual mediation or prayer.
All are invited to participate in the following city-wide gatherings:

This service will be satellite
broadcast live across North America and webcast on the Internet at www.CofChrist.org/worship.
The evening interfaith worship service will feature the
ministry of speakers from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths. The service
will be connected with activities taking place throughout the Kansas City area
on that day. Community of Christ President W. Grant McMurray will welcome the
gathering. Independence Ministerial Alliance President Joel Carmer, Community
of Christ, will give the invocation.
Rabbi Jacque Cukierkorn, spiritual leader at The New Reform
Temple in Kansas City, will speak about overcoming fear with hope from the
Jewish tradition. Ahmed
El-Sherif will speak from the Muslim tradition. He founded the American
Muslim Council of Greater Kansas City and is president of Shifa International,
a humanitarian organization. Allison Seed, Trinity Presbyterian Church, will
speak from the Christian tradition.
A community choir is being formed to lead the congregation
in song. A brass ensemble, piano, and organ music will also be featured.
Firefighters, police officers, and rescue workers will be honored as they
participate in a bucket brigade that supplies life-giving water to a beautiful
fountain on the rostrum.
Vigil Sites open to all for individual meditation or
