Community of Christ Offers Financial Support
to American Red Cross
The Community of Christ Oblation Fund donated $25,000 to the
American Red Cross for disaster aid in response to the tragic events of
September 11. The church joins with the many other organizations that are
offering assistance at affected areas in New York City, Washington, D.C., and
Pennsylvania. Because of the scope of this tragedy, the church feels a need to
tangibly express its concern and support.
“Community of Christ has always been generous in these concerns, and it’s
of utmost importance that we respond in whatever ways possible now,” said
Steve Jones, member of the Presiding Bishopric. The church’s Oblation Fund is
used specifically for social ministries, providing grants to needy individuals
and families and supporting disaster relief efforts such as the E. Coli outbreak
in Canada and the refugee crisis in Kosovo.
Church members who want to offer additional support have been urged to donate
blood and contribute to their local Red Cross agencies. During an interfaith
Community Prayer for Peace, held at Community of Christ Auditorium on September
12, an offering of more than $6,000 from Independence and surrounding
communities was collected for the American Red Cross.
The contribution to relief efforts from the Community of Christ Oblation Fund
and the offering from the community were presented to the American Red Cross on
September 14.
