Determining Aid for India Earthquake Victims

The state of Gujarat on India’s west coast was devastated January 26 by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that could be felt more than 1,000 miles from the epicenter. Several villages in the area were completely destroyed. More than 100 aftershocks followed the quake, some as high as 5.6 magnitude.

The Reorganized CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints has several church members in India, most living on the east coast. National minister Sam Kumar lives on the east coast in Chenai and reported feeling tremors at his home, but no damage. Kumar reported that no church families in Chenai have been affected; however, there are other areas with a significant church presence, such as Andhra and Orissa, yet to be checked.

As of February 1, the death toll was 14,240, with more dead believed to be trapped under the rubble. Government officials are estimating that number will reach between 30,000 and 45,000. The number of confirmed injured, 55,000, is also expected to rise significantly. With many people now living on the street and several areas without power and clean water, the threat of disease is a major concern.

Apostle Jac Kirkpatrick traveled to India to offer support and assess the situation of church members and communities. A report will be made to the church’s Mission Support Fund Committee and a donation will be sent to aid victims of the earthquake.
