Oblation to War Refugees in Africa
The Reorganized CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints
allocated $5,000 from their Oblation Fund to aid war refugees in the Democratic
Republic of Congo and Zambia.
Ronald Smith, stewardship commissioner for the church’s
Africa Region, reported that rebel forces have taken control of areas in the
Congo where large populations of church members--as many as 3,000--are living.
Many of these people have been displaced by the civil war, which began in August
1998. Renewed fighting in mid-January led additional refugees to Zambia.
Africa Region Apostle Bunda Chibwe and national minister
Kwesele Choma Choma are visiting these areas to assess damages and offer
support. Many people-church members, their families, and their communities-will
be helped through the use of these oblation funds.
