Oh Yes You Can!!"
Successful Musical Projects in an Economic Downturn

About five years ago the small congregation I attend saw the need to replace our pipe organ. Beginning such a huge project was indeed, an intimidating task for some 65 families. The organ committee met regularly; learned about pipe organs; worked with consultants; visited other pipe organs; and finally brought recommendations to the congregation.

I’ll never forget the business meeting. When the congregation heard $100,000 to $150,000 there were immediately questions: Couldn’t we do it for less money? Can we really do this? Maybe a cheaper instrument? Shouldn’t we spend that kind of money on outreach, foreign missions or work that needs to be done on our building?

Then came these comments: “I love to sing the hymns when the organ plays.” “It will enhance our worship.” “Having a quality instrument might well be a factor in outreach—it says positive things about our congregation.” “It would be another avenue in developing young musicians for the congregation.” With those encouraging remarks and the approval of the group by vote, the committee began a three-year pledge drive and our small congregation has successfully raised over $97,000!!! And in tough economic times! We realized that we could be successful, and the feeling of accomplishment was wonderful!

Your congregation may not be replacing an organ, but you are most likely thinking about a project you’d love to complete—whether it's buying new hymnals, hand bells or chimes; updating the sanctuary or worship center or landscaping or making the building wheelchair accessible—the list goes on and on!! Whatever the project, it is important to believe that it can be possible to accomplish.

We discovered that when you see a need, educate the congregation, call on good people to lead, prepare for the project and learn fundraising techniques, you will be headed for a successful project whether your group is large or small. You can be successful. You can. You really can.
