What songs best capture the identity, message, and mission of the Community of Christ? This is an important question at this particular point in our denomination’s history. As was announced in the August 2008 Music Matters column, a two-piece hymnal set is being developed for use in Community of Christ congregations. No matter where you live in the world, your answer to this question is essential to this project! Through the wonders of technology, it is easy for you to provide your input. We are asking everyone familiar with the church’s current four English-language hymnals (Hymns of the Saints, Sing for Peace, Sing a New Song, and By Request) to complete an on-line survey to help decide which of the 700+ pieces of music in those books should move forward to the new resource. Access the survey at www.cofchrist.org/hymnal. Act now – the survey will close on December 31. This survey is one of four simultaneous “streams” of information. the steering team is using to gather material for consideration. You can learn more about the entire effort by visiting www.cofchrist.org/hymnal. Briefly summarized, the project will include: If you have already taken the survey, THANK YOU! Please help spread the word to others who love Community of Christ and its rich musical heritage! We have also entered a window of Open Submission. Until April 15, 2009 you can recommend any text and/or tune, or variation of an existing piece, for consideration. In addition, this is a wonderful opportunity to be creative and submit original work. There are specific guidelines to follow, and those are available through the church’s website. So, musicians, writers, arrangers, and poets get busy! This is a time, unlike any other, for you to participate in the church’s musical heritage! —Jan Kraybill and Lauren Hall If you have suggestions or ideas for future columns, please contact: Please visit our FAQ page.
