New Venue for Independence Messiah Choir in 2011

For 94 years, the Independence Messiah Choir has offered live performances of Handel’s Messiah. For over 50 years they have been held at Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence, Missouri. Before that, performances were held at various locations in Independence and Kansas City, Missouri.

Since 2006, performances have been offered in association with the Kansas City Symphony and Chorus. This partnership utilizes the best of the resources of both organizations and links back to the very beginning of the tradition. In 1916, after the church’s first performance of Messiah at Stone Church, Kansas City’s symphony invited the choir to join them for a second performance downtown that same season.

Community of Christ has accepted the Kansas City Symphony’s invitation for the Independence Messiah Choir to continue this partnership when the Symphony moves the Messiah performance to its new venue in 2011, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City (www.kauffmancenter.org).

For this reason, the November 27, 2010, performance of Messiah, is the last one planned for the Community of Christ Auditorium. In 2011, Messiah performances at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will once again feature the Kansas City Symphony and Chorus in combination with the Independence Messiah Choir.
