Joseph Smith's Red Brick Store served the community of Nauvoo in many ways since its construction in 1841. Many people in early Nauvoo dropped by the general store to purchase goods or to pay their tithing in the bishop's back office. Many in the community also gathered in the large upper room for meetings or to visit Joseph in his office.

In 1980 the Red Brick Store was reconstructed to appear as it did in the 1840s. The same goods sold in the 1840s are still available for sale there today. Guides are on hand to show visitors the upper room where, among other things, the Ladies Relief Society first met.
