Scriptures
The Bible:
Isaiah 58: 10 NRSV "If you offer
your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your
light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday."
Matthew 25: 37, 40 NRSV "Then the
righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it we saw you hungry and gave
you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?”… And the king
will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the
least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”"
II Corinthians 8:13, 14 NRSV "It is a
question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so
that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there be a fair
balance."
II Corinthians 9:8 NRSV "And God is able
to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having
enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work."
I John 3: 17,18 NRSV "How does God’s
love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or
sister in need and yet refuses to help? Little children, let us love, not in
word or speech, but in truth and action."
Book of Mormon:
Mosiah 1:49 "When you are in the service
of your fellow beings, you are only in the service of your God."
Alma 16:119 "And the Lord provided for
them that they should hunger not, neither should they thirst; yea, and he
also gave them strength, that they should suffer no manner of afflictions,
save it were swallowed up in the joy of Christ."
Doctrine and Covenants
Doctrine and Covenants 59:4d "Yea, all
things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the
benefit and the use of man, both to please the eye, and to gladden the
heart; yea, for food and for raiment, for taste and for smell, to strengthen
the body, and to enliven the soul."
Doctrine and Covenants 101:2f adapted "...for
the earth is full, and there is enough and to spare; yea, I prepared all
things, and have given unto all to be agents unto themselves."
Doctrine and Covenants 163:4a. God, the Eternal
Creator, weeps for the poor, displaced, mistreated, and diseased of the
world because of their unnecessary suffering. Such conditions are not God’s
will. Open your ears to hear the pleading of mothers and fathers in all
nations who desperately seek a future of hope for their children. Do not
turn away from them. For in their welfare resides your welfare.
Doctrine and Covenants 163:11a. God is calling for a prophetic
community to emerge, drawn from the nations of the world, that is
characterized by uncommon devotion to the compassion and peace of God
revealed in Jesus Christ. Through divine grace and wisdom, this faith
community has been given abundant gifts, resources, and opportunities to
equip it to become such a people. Chief among these is the power of
community in Christ expressed locally in distinctive fashions while
upholding a unity of vision, foundational beliefs, and mission throughout
the world.
