The World Hunger Committee met on October 26, 2001, to consider a number
of grant proposals. The committee’s recommendations were forwarded to the
Mission Support Fund Committee where they were approved. Funding (in U.S.
dollars) has been provided to the requesting agencies as follows:
Proposals Submitted Directly to World Hunger Fund
USA (Independence, Missouri), Community Service League ($5,500 -
approved October 2001). To support a pilot program designed to
encourage/assist women to stop smoking through a formal smoking cessation
program, thereby freeing up additional household funds for food purchasing. Data
will be collected and reports made on the efficacy of the program.
USA (Branson, Missouri), Loaves and Fishes Community Kitchen ($1,500
- approved October 2001). Provides meals for needy persons in Branson area,
particularly during the season of high unemployment between January and March
each year. The grant will assist in the purchase of food and provide a second
microwave oven for the facility.

Requests Originating with Outreach International
Africa Field Program ($50,000 - approved October 2001). This grant
supports the budget of the Africa field project, which includes 20 human
development specialists in Kenya, Zambia, Congo, and Malawi who work to assist
village residents to resolve hunger-related problems through increased food
production, expanded use of working animals, and organizing cooperatives to
store and market the more abundant crops.
Brazil Day Care Nutrition Program ($10,000 - approved October 2001).
The Zion’s Hope Day Care Center in Ferraz de Vasconcelos, a suburb of Sao
Paulo, serves 100 preschool children, providing head-start training and
nourishing meals. World Hunger supports the nutrition aspect of the day care
program.
Dominican Republic School Food Program ($17,000 - approved
October 2001). This grant provides a source of safe water and a nutritious
breakfast for the most needy students in several schools sponsored by
Community of Christ mission programs in the LaRomana and San Pedro de Marcoris
areas.
India (Orissa State) Gumiguda School ($12,000 - approved October
2001). This grant supports the nutrition program at the East India Mission
School, Gumiguda. The school provides housing, food, and education to 200
students. It also gives limited nutritional support to thirteen non-formal
Education Centers serving an additional 400- 500 students.
Russia
(Gribanovka), Egg Production Project ($5,367 - approved
October 2001). This project is aimed at developing a chicken farm to produce
and market eggs in the local community to provide a source of nutrition as
well as add to the food security of the area.

Requests Originating With World Accord
Guatemala, Mujeres en Accion ($14,239 - approved October 2001). This
program works with approximately 1,200 persons, primarily women, to train them
in better marketing techniques and the utilization of micro credit, to effect
better crop storage and utilization.
Honduras, Programa de Reconstruccion ($34,828 - approved October
2001). This is an ongoing program, primarily in the La Buena Fe region, that
seeks to increase the productivity of small farmers through education in
improved farming techniques.
Nepal, Strengthening Civil Society Program ($16,214 - approved October
2001). This program is targeted toward vegetable cultivation, bee keeping, and
goat raising, thereby increasing household income and providing better food
security through the functioning of small, grassroots training organizations in
various areas of Nepal.
World Accord grants are in U.S. dollars, but
will be matched at a ratio of at least 3:1 by Canadian government funds.
