The World Hunger Committee met on October 27, 2000, and considered a number
of grant requests. The following were accepted and are being forwarded to the
Mission Support Fund Committee for final approval.
Direct Requests to the World Hunger Committee
TLC for 2. This is a project requesting $8500 to educate low-income and
disadvantaged pregnant women about the importance of good prenatal nutrition
and a healthy life style for the health of their babies. The program is
sponsored by the Community Services League of Jackson County, Missouri.
Chattanooga, Tennessee World Hunger Project. This proposal requests
$15,000 to assist in establishing a program to provide basic education and
nourishment to “hard living” disadvantaged persons as they struggle to
make life-changing decisions. It is sponsored by the East Tennessee Missionary
Project of the RLDS Church.
Los Fresnos Community Food Pantry. This request is for $10,000 to help
support the food bank over the next three years. It is in its third year of
operation, under the sponsorship of the Los Fresnos Branch of the RLDS Church,
and has grown steadily over the 25 months it has been established.
Requests Originating with Outreach International
Gumiguda School, Orissa, India. This grant represents a long term
commitment to the church-sponsored school in Gumiguda to provide food for the
enrolled students. Amount requested is $12,000.
Brazil Day Care Nutrition Program. The World Hunger Committee is being
asked to support the nutrition aspect of this long-standing project of the
RLDS Church in Brazil. This will provide a nutritious lunch for the children
on a daily basis. Grant requested is $10,000.
Dominican Republic Schools Food and Water Program. This program
provides adequate, safe water to all students in the RLDS-sponsored schools in
the Dominican Republic. It also provides a nutritious breakfast for more than
fifty of the poorest students at the La Romana School. Amount requested is
$17,000.
Haiti Church School Lunch Program. This grant is designed to provide a
nutritious hot meal each day for nine months to 300 malnourished students
attending RLDS-sponsored schools in several regions in Haiti. The nourishing
food will be served after school, enabling the children to walk home without
being weak from hunger and to have the energy to study at home before darkness
falls. Amount requested is $15,000.
Outreach International Administrative Grant. This grant supports the
screening and administration of programs being funded by World Hunger, as well
as providing on-going support services to the many projects that have been
funded by World Hunger in the past. Amount requested is $31,000.
Programa de Reconstruccion Rural (PRR). This is an on-going program
in the interior of Honduras (near La Buena Fe) designed to introduce
sustainable agriculture and increase the capacity of small farmers through
improved agriculture methods. Amount requested is $41,812.
Strengening Civil Society, Organisation Program (SCOP), Nepal.. This
grant request is for second year funding to support small-scale rural Nepalese
farmers who are participating in a variety of capacity-building and
agricultural projects. Amount requested is $13,423.
Mujeres en Accion (Women in Action), Guatemala. This money is used to
fund MeA’s ongoing programs aimed at building women’s capacity to earn
cash for growing vegetables and marketing them, as well as educating them in
agricultural methods and the obtaining of credit. Grant requested, $5,548.
It should be noted that all the World Accord grants are in US dollars, but
will be matched at a ratio of at least 3:1 by Canadian Government funds.
