The World Hunger Committee met October 22, 1999, to consider proposals for
funding. A brief description of the projects and the amounts (in U.S. dollars)
approved follows.
Gumiguda School, Orissa State, East India
Supports the nutrition program at the East India Mission School and the East
India Mission Non-Formal Education Centers for the 1999-2000 school year.
Approx. 600-700 students are supported. Amount approved: $10,000.
Brazil Day Care and Nutrition Program
Zion's Hope Day Care Center operates in a Sao Paulo,Brazil suburb. It
provides headstart training and nutritious meals for approx. 100 children
between the ages of 2 and 6. Amount approved: $10,000.
Dominican Republic Schools Food and Water Program
Provides adequate safe water and a nutritious breakfast to more than 50
students in LaRomana School, located in an area devastated by hurricanes and
affected by the loss of jobs attendant with the closing of the sugar
industry. Amount approved: $17,000.
Children First Project, (Nutra-Net)
Involves training twelve teachers in the use of "Whiz, Zip, and Zap
It" children's nutrition books for use in teaching disadvantaged
students to prepare nutritious meals. Amount approved: $8,720.
The above projects were presented by and will receive additional support
from Outreach International.
The following projects were presented by World Accord and will also be
supported with additional funds through that organization.
Mujeres en Accion (Women in Action)
This is an ongoing program to train indigenous Mayan women in Guatemala in
business and agriculture practices so that they may obtain credit and
increase food production. Amount approved: $5,621.
Programma de Reconstuccion Rural
Supports training in soil and water conservation for increased crop
production in the La Buena Fe area of Honduras. This is a multi-year project
that has been quite successful so far. Amount approved: $17,612.
Strengthening Civil Society Organisation Program (SCOP)
Begun in Nepal last year to train indigenous farmers in basic use of credit
to increase crop production and food storage. Amount approved: $12,185.
Promoting Participatory Sustainable Enterprise (Philippines)
Promotes economically and environmentally viable agricultural production
through research and increased technology that is both appropriate to the
culture and approved through the participatory process at the village level.
Amount approved: $20,000.
In addition to the projects approved for Outreach
International and World Accord, one additional proposal was considered. This
was for the support of a Food Pantry in Los Fresnos, Texas. This is the second
year of funding for this food pantry that is now feeding over 1100 persons a
month. Amount approved: $3,000.
The grand total approved for grants at this meeting was
$104,138.
