Summary of Actions, October 15, 2004

Requests Originating with Outreach International

Africa Field Program. This supports the budget whereby Outreach International field staff in Zambia, Malawi, and Democratic Republic of Congo partner with Community of Christ in human and community development programs to address sustainable projects involving food production, storage, and marketing. $75,000 approved.

Zion’s Hope Day Care and Nutrition Program. This grant supports the nutrition program of the Ferraz de Vasconcelos, Brazil, Day Care Center, providing nourishing meals to approximately 100 preschool children every day. $10,000 approved.

Dominican Republic Schools Food and Water Program. This grant supports a program that provides safe water and a nutritious meal to students in Community of Christ-sponsored schools in the Los Mulos and La Romana areas. $19,000 approved.

Gumiguda School - Orissa, East India. The Gumiguda School in Orissa continues a long tradition of providing quality education for students of poor families. This grant provides food for the nutrition program. $14,000 approved.

Field Training Program. This grant will assist in supporting the training of field staff in Africa, the Philippines, and Latin America in late 2004 and early 2005. These are staff who work in the villages to encourage human development projects related to agriculture, land development, and nutrition education. $7,000 approved.

Nicaragua Field Program. This program is similar to the Africa Field Program in that the grant helps support the staff engaged in human development projects related to providing safe water and food security projects, among others. $10,000 approved.

Total amount approved:  $135,000


Requests Originating with World Accord

PERC - El Salvador. This project is patterned after a successful program in Honduras that seeks to enable poor, displaced families to learn techniques of garden cultivation in poor sol, including hydroponic methods. $22,581 approved.

SAP Nepal. This grant supports an ongoing program of training poor farmers in improved agricultural methods. $20,403 approved.

World Accord Core Funding. This grant provides funds to help support administrative expenses involved in running an international organization, funds that are often difficult to raise from donors who wish to see their dollars go directly to field projects. $30,000 approved.

Total amount approved:  $72,984 USD

Note: all World Accord grants are in US dollars, but will be matched at a ratio of at least 3:1 by Canadian Government funds.


Direct Requests

Thomas Carman Food Pantry, Marina, California, USA. This represents third-year funding for this successful food pantry. It is anticipated that other sources of funding will be utilized in subsequent years. $5,000 approved.

Disaster Relief

Orlando, Florida, USA Food Bank received $5,000 and the ROCK Food Pantry of Pensacola, Florida, USA received $2,000 for disaster relief following hurricanes in Florida during August and September of 2004.

Total amount approved:  $7,000
