Requests Originating with Outreach International
Africa Field Program. This request supplements the amount
($52,000) granted by the World Hunger Committee in October 2002. A recent
visit by Outreach International officers confirmed the need for expansion of
the Africa Field Program in response to the crisis brought about by factors of
drought, civil war, and the HIV/AIDs epidemic. $10,000. Approved.
Haiti School Lunch Program. This ongoing program provides one
nutritious hot meal to malnourished children attending schools sponsored by
the Haiti Community of Christ. This grant enables the continuation of the
program that ensures over 350 poor children are fed throughout the school
year. $30,000. Approved.
Hunger Challenge. This grant is proposed to support the development of
a resource for youth that will educate them about hunger issues and support an
annual fast-a-thon, Hunger Challenge. The goals of the program are to increase awareness of the needs of hungry people and raise funds to assist
Outreach International in their support of hunger projects. $15,000. Approved.
Administrative Support Grant. This grant supports proposal
screening, program management, staff training, technical support, travel costs,
and other administrative expenses attendant to the operation of programs
supported by the World Hunger Committee. It allows virtually all of the funds
granted for individual projects to be utilized in program operations. $40,000.

Requests Originating with World Accord
SAP, Nepal. This program, Strengthening Civil Society- Organizational
Program, is aimed at increasing the capacity of local farmers and village
leaders to assess needs and devise strategies for enhancing food production,
storage, and marketing in 25 villages in rural Nepal. $33,784. Approved.
PK-197, Pakistan. This is a farmers training and community development
project. It seeks to identify sustainable agricultural methods and crops
suitable to the local climate and terrain, thereby improving the economic and
social status of the people in the Balochistan area of Pakistan. $1,467.

PK-200, Pakistan. This is a similar program to the PK 197 project in
Pakistan. It seeks to establish a farmers organization and instruct them in
better agricultural practices. Located in the Jacobabad District of Pakistan.

Programa de Reconstruccion Rural, Honduras. This is a program to
reforest areas previously destroyed by traditional slash and burn agricultural
methods and teach farmers soil conservation and terracing techniques in the
area around La Buena Fe. $33,748. Approved.
PRR, Honduras. This project also focuses on the agricultural community
around La Buena Fe, encouraging farmers to use new bean and corn varieties,
and experiment with hybrid seed development and nitrogen fixing through the use of
organic fertilizers. $38,062. Approved.
Mujeres en Accion, Guatemala. This ongoing program, originating in the
area around Chimaltenango, is aimed at capacity building and micro-enterprise
projects to support indigenous, rural women. The majority of the programs are
based in agriculture and seek to increase household food security. $15,009.

It should be noted that all the World Accord grants are in
US dollars, but will be matched at a ratio of at least 3:1 by Canadian
Government funds.
Direct Requests
Stockton Christmas Baskets. This request represents second-year funding
to support a program that provides a basket of food, along with some children’s
toys, to poor families in the Stockton, Missouri area. Stockton Community of Christ
members unite with other denominations, the local Food Pantry, and other social
service agencies to achieve a community-wide effort on behalf of the needy.
$1,500. Approved.
ETMP Food Ministry. This request is for a third year of funding to
provide nourishing snacks and meals for persons living in the neighborhood
served by the Chattanooga, Tennessee, Urban Ministries Center of the Community of
Christ. The average number of people served per week is 388. The average age of
participants is 14. $11,000. Approved.
Bread for the World. This grant represents the World Hunger Committee’s
support of Bread for the World, a Christian advocacy group that lobbies the
U.S. Congress on legislation affecting hunger-related issues. Funds granted support advocacy efforts and the yearly publication of a resource
entitled Hunger, produced by Bread for the World Institute. $35,000.

Ivory Coast Food Relief. This grant provides
supplemental income for Community of Christ congregation families to purchase
food. Since a civil war began in September 2002, prices for staple food items
such as rice, meat, fish, and poultry have risen sharply, severely limiting the
ability of families to afford food. The heads of families in two congregations
in Abidjan and one in Liliyo will receive monthly cash stipends for six months
for food. It is hoped that by that time peace in the country will have been
re-established. $17, 500. Approved.
