Summary of Actions, March 5, 2004

Requests Originating with Outreach International

Haiti School Nutrition Program. Ongoing support for the provision of nutritious hot meals to malnourished children attending schools sponsored by Haiti Community of Christ. $30,000.

Philippines Field Program. Implements Participatory Human Development (PHD) programs in the Philippines, particularly relating to increased agricultural production, providing potable water, and dryers for rice harvest. $35,400.

Dominican Republic Field Program. Implements PHD programs similarly to those in the Philippines, aiming at better food production, sanitation, and water supplies. $19,700.

Bolivia Field Program. Supports PHD programs aimed at meeting needs identified by village groups where food production and the storage and utilization of crops are of particular concern. $15,300.

Core Administrative Grant. This grant supports necessary administrative obligations assumed in managing program funds as they are applied throughout the world. $45,000.

Requests Originating with World Accord

SAP Nepal. Supports a national training program in Nepal to enhance the economic capacity of the rural poor, thereby enhancing a sustainable approach to food production and nutrition education. $33,784.

PRR Honduras. Supports an ongoing program of assisting rural poor to improve food security through improved farming techniques, seeds, and equipment. $45,863.

PERC El Salvador. Follows the model developed by PRR Honduras to increase food production and nutrition through improved farming methods. $14,179.

Mujeres en Accion. Supports an ongoing program to provide affordable credit to indigenous, rural women in Guatemala, thereby allowing them to market crops and generate disposable income more readily. $18,657.

World Accord Core Funding. Supports the administrative overhead associated with operating an international program-operating organization. This year’s increase reflects a shift in currency valuations between US and Canadian funds. $30,000.

Total amount approved:  $142,483 USD

Note: all World Accord grants are in US dollars, but will be matched at a ratio of at least 3:1 by Canadian Government funds.


Direct Requests

Stockton Food Baskets. Third and final year of funding for food baskets for needy in the Stockton, Missouri, area. $1,000.

Chattanooga, Tennessee, Urban Ministries. Supports a program aimed at assisting the urban poor in Chattanooga, providing food and other necessities. $11,000.

Bread for the World. Represents the annual support of this Christian advocacy organization based in Washington, D. C. $35,000.

Total amount approved:  $47,000


Grand total World Hunger Funds approved:  $334,883

Note:  The Committee also voted to authorize up to $2,500 for consulting services for Matt Bolton. Such services are to include, but not be limited to, conducting educational sessions with the Committee; researching NGOs, particularly those engaged in disaster relief; preparing papers for the use of the committee; writing articles for the Herald; critiquing the Web page; and other tasks as identified by the committee.
