World Hunger Fund Provides Hurricane Relief
The World Hunger Fund has responded to a request for aid from the Florida
Mission Center for hurricane relief efforts. A donation of $5,000 was sent in
September to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, an organization
founded through the Orlando Community of Christ in the 1980s.
The contribution from the Community of Christ World Hunger Fund will help
Second Harvest and its more than 450 member agencies to provide needed
services following the impact of recent hurricanes and tropical storms. These
agencies serve a six-county area. Financial officer for the Florida USA and
Southeast USA Mission Centers Greg Savage reported, “Funds are needed to
keep the extra demand for food moving through their system.”
Local church members, friends, and the Florida Mission Center provide
regular support to Second Harvest by donating dollars, food, and volunteer
hours. In response to additional needs following the hurricanes, Savage said,
“Members of several denominations and the Orlando general community helped
fill two tractor trailer trucks with food items.”
Because of damage from the storms, communication and travel has been
difficult in the southern United States and the Caribbean. Church leaders are
actively involved in damage assessment and providing support for these areas.
Additional funding will be considered as more information becomes available.
