Flooding in Haiti - Update

On Thursday, June 10, a group met together via teleconference for an update on the flooding situation in Haiti.

Michel Rosier, Haiti Mission Center Financial Officer, reported that two churches have been destroyed and two others were damaged. These church buildings also housed schools that are in partnership with Outreach International. Six church members are known to have died in this tragedy. Approximately twenty-five homes have major damage and more than twenty homes were lost. A large number of donkeys, horses, cattle, goats, and pigs were swept away or drown in the flooding. Some areas still have not been assessed because the damage is so vast, but these are the most desperate situations that we’re aware of at this time.

During the next week the pastors and congregational committee members in Haiti will meet with Michel Rosier to start the process of distribution of moneys to help support these church members. Last week $5,000 was sent to begin to cover the most immediate needs. The World Hunger Fund will provide an additional $5,000 for a total of $10,000 to buy seed to start the replanting process. Another $25,000 will be sent to buy food for more than 1,400 church members for the next few months.

This aid to provide seed and food is in addition to a grant of $25,000 in April from the World Hunger Fund for hunger needs in the country of Haiti. This funding resulted from the recent political revolt and the extreme hardships it created in an already impoverished country. This funding was distributed to help church members throughout the country to buy seeds for planting crops that will provide food for their families. In the past few months the World Hunger Fund has provided $60,000 for food and assistance to the church membership in Haiti.

If you would like to support the needs of the church members in Haiti, additional contributions can be made to the World Hunger Fund through your local congregational envelopes or by sending directly to World Hunger Ministries, 1001 W. Walnut, Independence, MO 64050-3562 USA.
