Bulletin Statement
A TIME TO REMEMBER THE HUNGRY
Saints are reminded that the first Sunday in March and September are
specifically set apart to remember the hungry by means of the World Hunger
portion of the Oblation Fund. In addition to your designated offerings, all
loose change will be processed as World Hunger contributions. In our
stewardship response, we have been admonished to be in the forefront of those
organizations and movements which are committed to bringing the ministry of
Jesus Christ to bear on the lives of all persons (D&C 152:9). Since 1979,
the World Hunger Fund of the church has been expressing that commitment by
supporting the hungry of the world. Grants to Outreach International and World
Accord support self-help projects to improve food production and storage,
provide access to safe water supplies and teach basic nutrition through the
use of village health workers, to mention only a few.
Also, direct grants from the World Hunger Fund to agencies like Oxfam
America provide relief in times of famine and disaster. A recent letter to the
World Hunger Committee from Oxfam president Raymond Offenheiser expressed it
thusly, “While the world turns its eyes to other issues, the work of
Oxfam’s program partners in Central Africa continues uninterrupted, as they
and the communities they serve struggle to rebuild the economic and social
fabric of their ravaged land. Thank you for helping to renew the promise of
change for the people of Central Africa.”
The Oblation offering today gives special emphasis to world hunger. All are
encouraged to remember the hungry of the world this day with a gift to the
Oblation/World Hunger Fund.
