World Hunger Emphasis Sunday
Yes, I know that many people are hungry—and
even starving—but I am not rich and I am
only one person. What can I do?
It all depends on how the question is asked. Are we resigned to doing
nothing, or are we really trying to find ways to give assistance?
There are many ways to help. A few years ago, Joyce Carter wanted to help
so she contacted philanthropist Alan Feinstein who suggested a project. She
organized twenty-seven church groups to raise money to feed the hungry in
their communities. These groups raised more than $374,000. Their efforts were
reported to Feinstein who rebated money to congregational groups for "seed
money" to continue their efforts. He also gave $1000 to the Community of
Christ World Hunger Fund. Perhaps this will not be an ongoing program, but
there are other creative solutions.
One elementary school girl enlisted the help of her friends in developing
various projects, and together they raised $10,000 to assist victims of a
disaster. Apparently it did not occur to her that she couldn't help, because
she was not a wealthy adult.
The most important element is truly wanting to help and then being willing
to take steps toward that goal. What can one person do to feed the hungry?
Almost anything if they are willing to step out in faith!
"Feed the hungry! Help those in trouble! Then your light will shine out
from the darkness, and the darkness around you shall be as bright as day"
(Isaiah 58:10 Living Bible).
