Bulletin Statement
Gather in My Name
World Hunger Emphasis
In Guatemala a group of women formed Mujeres en Accion (MeA), “Women in
Action.” They are women helping women. The program was started to help widows
left behind after the devastation of civil war; however, the program now aids
other women as well.
The women participating in the program originally borrowed money to
purchase materials to do traditional weavings, much like the sling in which
the baby on this bulletin is cradled. The weavings were then sold, earning
money to feed their families. Now the women have expanded to agricultural
projects. They are now making more money to add to their families’ incomes.
This is made possible through funding from World Hunger (World Tithes) and
World Accord.
The woman in this picture is a member of MeA. The baby she holds is the
youngest of eleven children, obviously very healthy and very well cared for.
The smile on the mother’s face says much about her outlook for not only her
future, but the future of her baby.
