In 1991, the United Nations adopted its commitment to the "Rights of the
child." At an interfaith religious service held in New York City in 2001 to
commemorate the 10th anniversary of this landmark the following message was
presented by the religious leaders gathered:
"We live in a world where insecurity and suffering is spreading at breathtaking speed
. . . . But in these trying times, let us never forget that in every child who is born, the potentiality of the human race is born again. Whether children build a world of peace or a world of hatred is as much a result of the choices we adults make, as of the choices they make. Children will build a world using the tools and materials we provide them with, so let us choose to teach them the ways of peace. And let us use this event to rededicate ourselves to that cherished cause - ever mindful, in the words of John F. Kennedy, that here on earth, God's work must truly be our own."
