A. Disciples’ Generous Response Story: World

Calgary, Alberta, Canada—Why Are We Here?

Each Sunday we are invited to “share equally” with Mission Tithes for local and world ministries. These stories are provided to keep us in touch with how your contributions to Mission Tithes are spreading the peace of Jesus Christ.

This story, Why Are We Here?, takes us to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in the Canada West Mission Centre. Greg Goheen relates: The young woman felt tired. She stood by the doorway, trying to decide whether she should venture into the group who was laughing, joking, and hugging one another. Taking her child’s hand firmly in her own, she stepped forward. Loving arms reached out to welcome them. Within minutes, the woman and her child felt a blanket of hope surround them. This single mother, recently diagnosed with breast cancer, could no longer work. She had a limited social network— the Calgary congregation’s community kitchen was her only outlet. She began to come for part of the day when she was able, and the group always cooked for her. What a blessing!

A few years before the young woman’s appearance at Calgary, Isabelle Williams asked, “Why are we here?” Her answer involved starting a community kitchen. This nonprofit agency gathers groups of people together who need healthy meals, a social network, or other needs, but have limited resources. Calgary’s kitchen was an ideal place. There are so many positive benefits to being part of a group like this—an opportunity to be part of a diverse group to laugh with, to share stories with, to support each other through the ministry of presence and, of course, have healthy, reasonably priced food to take home. The community kitchen brings hope, acceptance and caring. Your contributions to World Ministries Mission Tithes provide support for missionary outreach such as Calgary’s community kitchen. Thank you for responding faithfully by sharing so very generously.—Greg Goheen, financial officer, Canada West Mission Centre

C. Blessing on Our Offering

From John 3:16 (NRSV) we read: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

Sharing our Mission Tithes equally between local and world ministries changes our lives and those who receive the blessings from it. Let us share in the prayer of blessing for our offering.
