A. Disciples’ Generous Response Story: World
Orissa, India—Build with Faith
Each Sunday we are invited to “share equally” with Mission Tithes for local and
world ministries. These stories are provided to keep us in touch with how your
contributions to Mission Tithes are spreading the peace of Jesus Christ.
This story, Build with Faith, takes us to Orissa, India, part of the Asia Mission Field. On Christmas Day 2007, Christians in the state of
Orissa, India, awakened to shocking news. Religious extremists promoting Hindu
nationalism launched an attack on Christians in the state. They set fire to
churches, homes, and schools. Villagers fled for their lives. Many hid in the
forests for days, often without shelter, food or water. Family members became
separated. Many died in the attacks. Community of Christ leaders in Orissa
responded to the needs of their neighbors immediately. None of the villages or
churches affected is part of our denomination. But in the time of need,
Christian unity, love, and fellowship overcame any possible differences of
opinion about belief and polity.
Within days after the attack, the Presiding Bishopric agreed to send Oblation
relief to India. Villagers could rebuild their homes and places of worship. They
could replace household goods, clothing, and farm tools. Oblation offerings are
an important part of the Disciple’s Generous Response. You don’t need to stretch
your imagination to state, “mission tithes save lives.” Thank you for responding
faithfully by sharing so very generously.—Steven L. Shields, field appointee,
Asia Mission Field

C. Blessing on Our Offering
From Doctrine and Covenants 4:2a – b (adapted) we read: Remember, faith,
virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, …kindness, godliness, charity,
humility, diligence. Ask and ye shall receive, knock and it shall be opened unto
you. Amen.
Sharing our Mission Tithes equally between local and world ministries changes
lives around the world. Let us share in the prayer of blessing for
our offering.
