World Day of Peace

Gathering in Silence
Call to Prayer
Lighting of Candle

Invitation

Welcome today to this sacred place. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world.

Let us unite our hearts and minds and voices as we pray for peace in our time and for this earth. It is our usual custom to pray for a single country or people each day, but today, on this New Year’s Day, we come together to pray for peace among the World’s Human Family. There are so many in our family who are hungry today, so many are afraid and alone. There are so many that sometimes it seems overwhelming, and we turn away because one person couldn’t make a difference. Let us make a resolution this New Year’s to help just one member of our human family, to offer a hand and bring one person food or warmth or help. In this way, one person at a time, eventually all will be cared for.

We greet you in the name of the Prince of Peace who calls us to worship.

Scripture Reading: Psalm 25:1, 4-7 The Inclusive Psalms
  To you, Adonai,
    I lift up my soul
Show me your ways, Adonai!
Teach me your paths!
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation.
I wait all the day long for you.
Remember your mercies, Adonai, your love—
    your ancient and unwavering love!
Pardon the sins of my youth
    and my rebellious ways;
remember me because of your love,
    because of your goodness, Adonai!

Prayer for Peace by Everett S. Graffeo, Independence, Missouri

  Lord,
We pause for a quiet moment to remember.
We remember the others who impact our lives:
They pass in review and we ask hopefully,
"Forgive us for transgressions committed and for compassion withheld.
Hold us close as unique and worthful souls in your life.
Be there for us as we would be there for you.
May we be at Peace one with another."

Our eyes turn outward—
We see God's world, now ours by gift.
We treasure your beauty and wonder at your mystery.
We turn with you in the unfolding of our mutual future.
Help us to live in harmony with your planet, Lord,
With sea and air, plant and animal,
With men and women, with family and neighbor,
With island and continent.

We are yours by natural birth.
We are called friends by second birth.

We have our hope in you.
Our faith is strengthened by you.

Our love is a reflection of you.
May the gift of your Son be appreciated more fully
Among all nations of the earth,
That your justice will reign and your peace abide,
For we pray it in His name. Amen.

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate.
Lord of all space, we thank you for knowing us. We thank you for family, friends and those who will be friends, the earth and all its bounty.
The People Pray in Silence
We rejoice when one step is made toward peace between nations but know the journey is long and the steps are many. On this day, please hear our prayers concerning our world’s human family. May we all be encouraged to continue our quest for justice until all of us live in a peaceful world.
The People Pray in Silence
We lament the causes of injustice and seek enlightenment that we may understand better our part in peace for the world. We confess that we are less than you created us to be and humbly ask forgiveness.
The People Pray in Silence
We would not forget the need for peace in ourselves, our families, our nation, and our church. Hear our concerns, we pray.
The People Pray in Silence
Please use this space to pray for any current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
The People Pray in Silence
This day, in response to your call, we offer ourselves as instruments of peace in our world. Amen.

Sending Forth
Our service for today will close with ministry of music, but you are invited to remain and pray or meditate in the quiet of this place for as long as you may wish.

In this New Year, let us resolve to be the peacemakers and peacekeepers we have been called to be. God will guide us as we build peace in our world. Amen.
