Thank you for coming to join us in worship
today. Welcome to this sacred place. Each day in this Temple dedicated
to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In
addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Myanmar in our prayers. Located in
Southeastern Asia, Myanmar is an ethnic melting pot. The country
includes Myanmar and Shan rice farmers, Chin and Kachin slash-and-burn
farmers, Arakanese fishermen, and Karen tribespeople. Independence from
Britain in 1948 was followed by isolationism and socialism. Myanmar is a
resource-rich country with a strong agricultural base, and is a leading
producer of gems, jade, and teak. However, military rule prevents the
economy from developing, and the Burmese people remain poor and are
becoming more so.
Also today we recognize the festival of Rosh Hashanah --the name means
"Head of the Year" --is observed for two days beginning on Tishrei 1,
the first day of the Jewish year. It is the anniversary of the creation
of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, and their first actions toward
the realization of mankind's role in God's world, and proclaim God, King
of the Universe.
With the psalmist we say, "Give ear to our words, O Lord; consider our
meditation. Hearken unto the voice of our cry, our God, for unto thee
will we pray." |

Prayer for Peace by Ann Frizzell,

O God,
We come to you on this first day of Rosh Hashanah humbled by your many
blessings. During these Days of Awe, we turn from ordinary ways to
consider the extraordinary. We think of our relationship with you and
with the world you have given us. When we think about your goodness to
us, we are moved to express regret for past errors, known and unknown,
and we reaffirm our yearnings for the future.
We have strong desires for peace in your world. Help us not let the
routine of daily life keep us from seeing what it is we can do to bring
peace. How amazing that you love us enough to make us in your image. How
sad we forget that sometimes. Help us to remember we are yours and your
work for us is to do peace. As you are gracious, we must be gracious; as
you are merciful, we must show mercy; as you are holy, we must walk in
the path of holiness.
Help us as we think thoughts of peace to also participate in acts of
peace. Help us as we strive for inner peace to not forget our outer
person must show peace. Help us to hold peace in our hearts an also on
our lips. Help us in our fragile life between birth and death to
continually seek your peace, for ourselves and for others who share our
journey. Help us to keep from being broken and to help others become
whole.
On this Day of Awe, remind us of our redemption and cause us to desire
the peace that comes from you, for ourselves and all your creation. Keep
us aware that we can always turn to you in love.
O God supreme, who hears our prayer in mercy, we commit ourselves this
day to be agents of peace. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. |

We bow before you in repentance of our sins. Help us to be ever more
aware of those things we should omit from our lives. |
| The People Pray in Silence |

We especially ask your blessing on the nation of Myanmar and its people.
Guide them and give them courage to seek peace. May we all learn to
trust each other. |

leaders so that they will make wise decisions to benefit all nations and
bring forth justice. |
