Welcome today to this sacred place. Each day in this
Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in
our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of the United Arab Emirates in our
prayers. The United Arab Emirates is a union of seven sovereign
sheikhdoms, formed when the British withdrew from the Gulf in 1971. The
United Arab Emirates has become a major international business center
and one of the most stable and untroubled countries in the Arab world,
although there have been controversies to deal with. Border disputes
among the emirates—and the degree to which integration among the
sheikhdoms should be pursued has been a subject of constant debate.
Recently the UAE has developed an economy less reliant on oil revenues.
The large expatriate labor force has raised issues of wages and working
conditions, bringing into focus the rights of foreign workers. With its
massively multicultural population, the United Arab Emirates is one of
the most liberal and pluralistic countries in the Gulf region.
The General Assembly of the United Nations has designated June 5th as
World Environment Day to deepen public awareness of the need to preserve
and enhance the environment. Let us remember the environment in our
prayers especially today.
As we light our candle, may its flame cause us to open our minds, and
challenge us to new avenues of peace as we worship together. |

| Scripture Reading: Doctrine and Covenants
163:11a. |
| |
God is calling for a prophetic community to
emerge, drawn from the nations of the world, that is characterized by
uncommon devotion to the compassion and peace of God revealed in Jesus
Christ. Through divine grace and wisdom, this faith community has been
given abundant gifts, resources, and opportunities to equip it to become
such a people. Chief among these is the power of community in Christ
expressed locally in distinctive fashions while upholding a unity of
vision, foundational beliefs, and mission throughout the world. |

Prayer for Peace by Wallace Smith,
Independence, Missouri |
| |
God of earth and sea and sky, God of us all, we come to
you at this moment with heads bowed in acknowledgement of your presence
in our midst. As we raise our voices to you in prayer and song may the
unspoken meditations of our hearts also lift in the warmth of your
Spirit until they have penetrated the very vault of heaven and returned
to us blessed by your love and grace.
Even in this quiet moment in this peaceful place, we are reminded anew
of the many places in your world where strife and enmity, sorrow and
pain are being experienced by your sons and daughters. Lord, we have
such a desire to be the instruments through which release and relief can
come to those who are suffering the effects of persecution and
oppression. But we sense just how flawed even our best intentions are
and how blemished with pride are even our most humble efforts to be your
servants. Touch our impulses with your grace, O Lord, that they may be
cleansed and rendered acceptable for your purposes.
May all those in distress feel the peace of your comforting presence
this very hour as our petitions ascend to you. For we offer our prayer
in the blessed name of your Son, Jesus the Christ, Amen. |
