Call to Prayer

We greet you in the name of the
God who has called us to peace. Welcome to this sacred place. Each day
in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for
peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different
country.
Today we will hold up the people of Malta in our prayers. Located in
southern Europe, Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in
1814. The island staunchly supported the United Kingdom through both
World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent
in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. In recent decades, the
Maltese achieved considerable prosperity, thanks largely to tourism -
every summer the Maltese population triple due to an influx of tourists
- but the island nation is also increasingly benefiting from trade and
light industries. On the 1st May,2004, Malta became the smallest of ten
countries to attain membership of the European Union. Malta is noted for
its fine crafts - particularly its handmade lace, handwoven fabrics,
blown glass and silver filigree. Folk traditions in music are very
strong, and Malta holds a folksong competition every year.
We light this candle as a symbol of our commitment to a just and
peaceful world. May the peace of God who has called us here guide our
worship. |

Prayer for Peace by Glenn C. Johnson, Tustin,

Creator of Life and Author of Peace,
We offer up this prayer for peace, seeking earnestly for peace within
our hearts, peace within our relationships, peace within our communities
and peace within our world.
Thank you, O God, for the great gift of peace you have given us in the
life of Jesus and the abiding comfort of your Spirit. We pause in this
moment to remember your words, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give
unto you.” Calm our hearts. Let us breathe in the peace you intend for
our lives and consider our need for peace in daily living.
As we meditate upon peace, we are also aware of injustice in our world,
our communities, and our homes. Forgive us, O God, when we ignore
injustice or silently contribute to inequality by receiving rewards
based on privilege. Grant us the wisdom to live our lives as stewards of
peace.
Help us to discover more deeply what Jesus taught us about the basileia
tou theou, the kingdom of God. Help us to find ways to work together to
build the peaceable realm of God by becoming a people of the Temple, a
temple that is dedicated to peace, reconciliation and healing of the
spirit. Indeed, help us to share the peace of Jesus Christ freely and
joyfully.
We are so thankful for this moment each day, when our prayers ascend
toYou, when we consider the needs in our world, and our needs within.
Bless each of us with that calm reassurance of your peaceful presence
even now, we pray, in the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen. |

Lord of all space, we thank you for knowing us. We thank
you for family, friends, those who will be friends, the earth and all
its bounty. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We confess that we are less than you created us to be and humbly ask
forgiveness. We lament the causes of injustice and seek enlightenment
that we may understand better our part in peace for the world. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We rejoice when one step is made toward peace between nations, but know
the journey is long and the steps are many. On this day, please hear our
prayers concerning the nation of Malta. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We would not forget the need for peace in ourselves, our families, and
our nations. Hear our concerns, we pray. |
| The People Pray in Silence |

Please use this space to pray for any
