Gathering in Silence
Call to Prayer
Lighting of CandleInvitation |
| |
We welcome you today to the
quiet, simple dignity of this place as we gather to worship. Each day in
this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace
in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Kuwait in our prayers. Located in
the Middle East, Kuwait was attacked and overrun by Iraq in August of
1990. Seven months later, routed by a U.S.-led coalition, Iraqi forces
left behind a burned and looted land. By 1992 the last of more than 700
oil well fires had been quenched, and Kuwait has since rebuilt its
petroleum sector. Today, many resources are being used to remove land
mines and clean up environmental damage left over from the Iraqi
retreat. Ten percent of oil revenues are, by law, put into a trust to
prepare for the day that Kuwait's massive oil reserves dry up.
We greet you in the name of God who has called us to worship. May the
light from our candle of peace illumine our hearts, open our minds, and
challenge us to new avenues of peace as we worship together. |

God is our refuge and strength, a present
help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear. There shall be a river,
whose streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of
the tabernacle of the Most High. “Be still, and know that I am God; I
will be exalted in the earth.” The Lord of hosts shall be with us, the
God of Jacob is our refuge. |

Prayer for Peace by Delores Rains, Lee's
Summit, Missouri |

Dear God,
In the name of the Prince of Peace we pray, wanting to express our deep
gratitude for your abiding love and grace.
We pray for persons who are experiencing the turmoil of brokenness which
separates them from others and from sensing your presence. May your
peace bring wholeness where there is brokenness.
We pray for persons who are experiencing the agony of physical pain
which prevents the expression of joyful living. May your peace bring
comfort in the midst of such pain.
We pray for your creation of plant and animal. May humankind be wise in
its stewardship of your generous handiwork. May all persons strive for
peaceful living with all of creation.
We pray for the earth's children. May this precious resource, known as
youth, experience a peace that passes all understanding. May the adult
children of God leave a legacy of true shalom for future generations.
May the peace of God dwell in our hearts, in our words, and in our
actions as we engage each other throughout our days. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
O God, you are the way of peace. Come into the
brokenness of our lives and our land with your healing love. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Help us to be willing to bow before you in true repentance, and to bow
to one another in real forgiveness. By the fire of your Holy Spirit,
melt our hard hearts and consume the pride and prejudice which separate
us. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Fill us with your perfect love which casts out fear, and bind us
together in that unity which you share with the Trinity. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for all ecumenical initiatives and all occasions which bring
together the faithful Christians of different traditions. We remember
the people of Kuwait. May they learn peace in this age and on this day. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We thank you and praise you for love that sustains us, for wisdom that
directs us, and for the desire that beckons us toward peace in our
world. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.

In the name of Jesus the Christ we pray. Amen. |

| Sending Forth |
| |
We will conclude our service today with ministry of
music. We invite you to remain in the quiet of this place to pray or
meditate for as long as you may wish.
May the peace we claim for ourselves grow and spread throughout the
whole earth. May the God in whose name we have met, keep us to fulfill
our promises to be peaceful in our world. Go in peace. Amen. |
