Invitation

Welcome today to this sacred place. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.

Today we will hold up the people of Argentina in our prayers. Argentina is located in South America. Pre-Columbian Argentina was farmed by sedentary Indian groups and used as a hunting ground by nomads. Although Indian resistance discouraged it, Argentina was eventually ruled by Spain. Dissatisfaction with this rule led to a revolution in 1810 and eventual independence in 1816. Deep-seated conflicts were revealed, but the Unitarist constitution of 1853 ushered in growth and prosperity. During the 20th century, Argentina experienced weak civilian rule and economic failure, leading to a military coup which paved the way for Juan Perón to take power as a dictator. After his death, Argentina suffered under military rule during which up to 30,000 people “disappeared.” The country has returned to the 1853 constitution. Economic problems continue to be a significant issue for Argentina, as does ownership of the Falkland Islands, the cause of a war between Argentina and Great Britain.

June 26 is set aside by the United Nations as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The Day aims at the eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the 1984 Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which entered into force on 26 June 1987.

Also this day the General Assembly, in 1987, decided to observe June 26 as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

We greet you in the name of God who is the giver of all. It is the creator of light and goodness that we worship and praise today as we pray for peace in our world.

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 40:28-31
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. God will not grow tired or weary, with understanding no one can fathom. The Lord gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and the young may stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Prayer for Peace by Ms. Jimmie L. Radliff, Spring, Texas

  Almighty God of all,

Through the cleansing power
      of Thy pardon and love,
      we seek to serve Thee.
Help us strengthen our limbs, our wits,
      our tools and temporal means
      for this service.
In the face of hate and violence,
help us to be the smile of love
      and the strength of meekness.
In the face of physical hunger
      and helpless thirst for wisdom,
may we be tears of compassion,
      providers of sustenance,
and the teachers of Thy laws.
In the face of hopelessness and apathy,
      challenge us to joyful demonstration
      of Kingdom living.

Through the power of the Prince of Peace, we pray. Amen.

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate.
Let us join in a common confession of our sins. For the arrogance of our pride of race, of nation, and of class, by which we put down others not of our kind and thus break the community of the human family, in defiance of your will, we ask forgiveness.
The People Pray in Silence
We ask your watch care and blessing for the people of Argentina. Continue to bless their activities to foster peace in all the world we ask.
The People Pray in Silence
We also ask your blessing and help for the concerns of people gathered here today. Hear us we pray.
The People Pray in Silence
Please use this space to pray for any current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
The People Pray in Silence
We pray in the name of the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Sending Forth
We conclude our service today with meditation music. Feel free to remain to pray or meditate in the quiet of this place for as long as you may wish.

Let us hold our tongues when it would hurt another. Let us reserve judgement when our own selfish interests would prevail. Let us promote justice among our families, our communities, all nations, and peoples of the earth. The God of light and knowledge will bless our efforts. Let us go in peace. Amen.
