Staff Lunch on May 7

Mark your calendar for May 7! Share in an all-staff lunch that lifts up Community of Christ Hispanic heritage and culture. Several recognitions will be presented regarding Estate & Financial Planning, Temple Ministries and more. Lunch is a taco bar, dessert & beverage and will be served in the Laurel Club dining room. Come in and find a seat when the doors open at 11:15 a.m. We’ll have a welcome and blessing on the food promptly at 11:30.

Graduation Assistance

This May, IHQ is hosting 15 area graduations. To support our Facilities team staff in maintaining a healthy balance between their work and personal lives during this hectic time, we are in need of a few people to help at the graduations listed below. The job includes giving directions, reminding people to be safe on the steps and ramps, and picking up the chamber and hallways after the event. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Human Resources Ministries can provide specific information about hourly rates for this work. Please contact Louie Jorgensen at ext. 1314 if you are able to help.

  • 3 people - Oak Grove, Monday, May 12, at 5:45 p.m.
  • 2 people - Ruskin, Tuesday, May 13, at 5:45 p.m.
  • 1 person - Ray-Pec, Friday, May 16, at 5:45 p.m.
  • 1 person - Chrisman, Sunday, May 18, at 5:45 p.m.
  • 1 person - Grandview, Monday, May 19, at 5:45 p.m.

Library News and Subscriptions

If you work onsite at Independence you can have any periodicals the library subscribes to delivered to your office. Contact Sue McDonald for a list of available periodicals.

Also the library hosts a paperback book and magazine exchange shelf at the back of the library. They are always looking to add more paperbacks and magazines to the collection. Please come and help yourself.

Denominational Sharing to Follow Ecumenical Women’s Gathering

Women ages 15 and up from Canada and the United States are encouraged to register for, “Claim a New Vision Together: Envision, Equip, Empower, Engage,” at www.gathering08.org for $200. Call ext. 2247 or visit www.CofChrist.org/WomensConf/ for more details about this June 19–22 event sponsored by Church Women United and hosted by Community of Christ International Headquarters. (Policy for staff women at International Headquarters who will attend) *

Following the final worship of the ecumenical event, Community of Christ attendees will enjoy a special closing event. During a catered luncheon in the Auditorium Lower Assembly Room, we will share with each other and church leaders including Presidents Steve Veazey and Becky Savage, Apostles Stassi Cramm and Mary Jacks Dynes, Central Mission Center President Barbara Borkowski and others about what we can do as individuals, congregations, and a worldwide church to respond in our communities to issues raised during the conference.

A suggested donation will cover the cost of the closing event. The sending forth will conclude by 3:00 p.m.

Take Your Child to Work Day

After sending an e-mail to see who brought their kids to work on April 24, Jillian and I traveled around headquarters doing interviews. Below are interview questions and photos by Jillian.

Michaela, daughter of Andra Reynolds
(Fiscal Services Team)
Age: 11
Favorite Color: Pink
What I’ve been doing today: “I’ve been walking to a ton of places with my mom. She has files on three different floors and we always need something from a different floor!”

Claire, daughter of Carina Wilson
(E-group leader)
Age: 9
Favorite Color: dark pink and lime green
What I’ve been doing today: “I’ve been helping make bookmarks to give to all the volunteers this month because it's Volunteer Month.”

John Pinkerton
Age: my inner child is 8
Favorite Color: green; at 8, his favorite color was red
John responded to our e-mail and indicated that he’d brought his inner child to work today. We couldn’t resist a stop at his office after he said sometimes his inner child gets lonely since he’s the only one there!

Jessica, daughter of Michelle Booth (Presiding Bishopric)
Age: 13
Favorite Color: rainbow

Catherine, daughter of Carina Wilson
(E-group leader)
Age: 13
Favorite Color: green

What we’ve been doing today: “We got to go to the offices upstairs from my mom’s and help clean out and recycle a ton of old stuff,” said Catherine. “There was some really cool stuff we found from the 1980s up here – it’s pretty neat,” said Jessica.

Jay, nephew of Phyllis Moore
(Children’s Peace Pavilion)
Age: 13
Favorite Color: red and blue – mostly blue

Aaron, nephew of Phyllis Moore
(Children’s Peace Pavilion)
Age 14
Favorite Color: red

Brandon, son of Phyllis Moore
(Children’s Peace Pavilion)
Age: 13
Favorite Color: blue

What we’ve been doing today: “We’ve done a ton of stuff today and it's not even lunch time. We’ve been making new masks, putting together flags, mailing letters to groups coming to visit and I even got to guide a group around the Pavilion,” said Jay.

Kent Parker
Age: 53
Favorite Color: green (deep Kelly green to be exact)
Kent also responded to our e-mail and asked if it counted since he thought of himself as a big kid. We stopped by and got to see the party blowers he gifted to everyone on his team just for fun!

Danielle, daughter of Michelle Booth (Presiding Bishopric)
Age: 11
Favorite Color: green
What I’ve been doing today: “I helped with the mail today and I made some new decorations for my mom’s office.” After a computer glitz was fixed, Danielle planned to help with a Power Point presentation too.

Missy, daughter of Rick Wilton
(Technology Support Team)
Age: 18
Favorite Color: purple
What I’ve been doing today: “I’ve been helping my dad look at some new servers and we worked up in the computer lab. We cleaned up the systems and updated the software. I also did a mail run with Margaret earlier.”

Gabe, son of John Glaser
(Hispanic Leadership Development)
Age: 11
Favorite Color: yellow
What I’ve been doing today: “I’ve been helping my dad with some errands, getting him some coffee and listening to them talk about translations stuff. My dad said that just for today he would double my salary - which is zero by the way!”

Jillian, daughter of Jenn Killpack (NewsPEACE editor)
Age: 8
Favorite Color: blue and lime green
What I’ve been doing today: I interviewed other kids and took photos. I also helped read at the Prayer for Peace today with my mom.

Jillian and I really enjoyed meeting your kids and talking with them. Thanks for sharing them with us!
