Climate Change Series Programs

4 April 2024

An informational climate change series sponsored by the Community of Christ Greater Pacific Northwest USA Mission Center has scheduled a film discussion and presenters through June. One-time registration is required. The series is free. All are at 4:00 p.m., Central Daylight Time.

  • On 7 April: "Migration and Displacement in a Changing Climate."
Presenter: Robert McLeman, co-author 2022 UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report. McLeman is based at Wilfred Laurier University, Canada.
  • On 21 April: Screening The Climate Restorers, Part 1
Presenter: Phoebe Barnard; with film-maker John Bowey; narrated by actor Peter Coyote
The first of four films, the series highlights nature-based technologies, and vast-scale ecosystem restoration, among other things, using global scientists, economists, politicians, justice advocates, and indigenous wisdom-keepers. The film is 54 minutes long. There is no charge to view the film, but it is a once-only “friend-raising” event, designed to provide support and raise funds for future films.
  • On 5 May: "Live Simply, So Others Can Simply Live"
Presenter: Ruth Valerio, executive director, Tearfund, United Kingdom
Valerio will focus on personal choices to make that can address the climate crisis. Caught in global consumerism, we need to simplify–reduce our “things” so we can increase the breadth and quality of our relationships to one another and all that lives on Earth. This brings in the second part of the title–justice, a crucial topic in our Christian texts and admonitions.
  • On 9 June: "Defending Forests: A Spectrum of Strategies"
Presenter: John Buckley, executive director, Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center; former elite “hotshot” forest firefighter
Buckley will explore the valued place of forests within ecosystems–and the value for humans. He will illustrate ways human activity threatens forests, including the climate crisis–and how forests can help mitigate the climate crisis. Finally, he will share how individuals and groups can join others in advocating for best practices and relationships with forests.
  • Previous sessions are available online.
