Heart’s Desire

10 May 2024

As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches but rather on God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

1 Timothy 6:17

[Excerpted from Choose Generosity: Discovering Whole-Life Stewardship, Herald Publishing House, 2019, pp. 53–54]

Jesus challenged us to strive first for God’s kingdom and then promised that God will provide all we really need. Wealth sought for kingdom purposes is an investment in God’s will. If we seek wealth for personal power and advancement, we substitute them for our relationship with God.

Turning to the Book of Mormon, Jacob shared similar instructions to the people of Nephi.

But, before you seek for riches, seek for the kingdom of God. And after you have obtained a hope in Christ, you shall obtain riches, if you seek them; and you will seek them for the intent to do good, to clothe the naked, and to feed the hungry, and to liberate the captive, and administer relief to the sick and the afflicted. (Jacob 2:22–24)

Jacob’s teachings upheld Jesus’ teachings about wealth, First, we are to seek God’s kingdom. Second, we receive hope in Christ of God’s love and grace. Third, if we do seek wealth, then we should seek it only to do God’s will.

These scriptural encouragements and warnings are just as valid today as when they were first written. God still calls us to seek God’s kingdom first. If we commit all that we are and all that we have to fulfill this mission, then our hearts remain centered on God’s will, and God’s light fills our lives. As disciples committed to Christ’s mission, our generosity is always in response to the growing revelation of God’s amazing grace. The true measurement of generosity is a measurement of the desire of our hearts.

Prayer Phrase

“What can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Spiritual Practice

Breathe Hope

Find a quiet space where you can sit without distractions. Light a candle. Take a few deep breaths, allowing your body to relax with each exhale. As you breathe, let go of any tension or worries you may be holding onto. Take notice of the way the flame dances and flickers, casting light and shadow in the room. As you observe the flame, imagine it symbolizing the spark of hope within you. With each breath, imagine the flame growing brighter and stronger. Visualize this light spreading throughout your body, filling you with a sense of hope and positivity. Take a moment to express gratitude for the blessings in your life, no matter how small they may seem.
